Boy oh boy, I've been a bad blogger lately. I haven't been a great gardener either.
The Trader Joe's/Topsy Turvy experiment doesn't appear to be going well.

This is the day after I planted my Early Girl tomato start (a month and a half ago).

This was taken earlier this week.

The only thing that makes me slightly hopeful that I might get one tomato is that I saw one tiny yellow flower this morning when I fed the chickens. So my experiment still has the teeniest bit of tomato potential.

I threw a couple sponges into the bag because all the water was running straight out the Trader Joe's bag and into the (sanitized!) kitty litter bucket I'm attempting to grow potatoes in underneath it. I thought the sponges might help the plant retain some water. Any other helpful ideas are welcome. Bring 'em on!

  1. Ah, poor tomato! Sucks when plant experiments go wrong.

Anyway, I'm hardly an expert, but I wonder if there might be *too* much water involved -- seems like all that water running down the stem has given it a kind of an unhealthy slimy look (at least in the photo).

If the soil (or whatever's in that crazy bag) isn't retaining water, there are amendments you can pick up pretty cheap at garden stores that soak it up ... probably better than a sponge.

Either way, I'm gonna speculate "too much water". You can let the soil almost dry out between waterings ... almost!

Hope that helps ... congrats on the flower. :)

  2. That's a good tip. I've been watering every day. I'll chill out and look into some soil amendments. Stay tuned for further developments. :)
